rapes in India

Rape is the fourth most common crime against women in India

Rape Risk Reduction

India recorded an average of 87 rape cases daily in 2019 and overall 4,05,861 cases of crime against women during the year, a rise of over 7% from 2018. However, the conviction rate is as low as 27.8%. This means, out of 100 accused, only 28 gets convicted.

In 15,972 of the total 33,356 rape cases, the offenders were either family friends or neighbour or employer or other known person, while in 12,568 cases, the offenders were friends or online friends or live-in partner on pretext of marriage or separated husband, the data stated.

Rape is a non-bailable offense in the Indian penal code,” Anuja Trehan Kapur, a New Delhi-based criminal psychologist and advocate, told DW. Kapur has assisted government officials on high-profile criminal cases, including the 2012 gang rape.

“But people do get bail because of a lack of evidence [in many cases]. The accused are often sheltered by police, or politicians, or even lawyers,” Kapur added.

Rape Risk Reduction

  • Secure your car and home. …
  • Avoid unsafe situations and strangers. …
  • Flee if you are in a potentially dangerous situation. …
  • Engage in passive or active resistance. …
  • Think! …
  • You are responsible for your own safety. …
  • Don’t let a stranger inside your home to use the phone; make the call for him.
  1. Recognize that people neither ask for nor deserve to be abused, harassed, assaulted or raped—ever.
  2. Support and believe survivors of sexual violence.
  3. Bring awareness and challenge victim-blaming statements.
  4. Give constructive input about why comments or jokes that perpetuate rape culture or sexism are not okay.
  5. Get help or take action by directly intervening when you see someone taking advantage of a person who is not capable of giving consent.
  6. Consent is mandatory and every sexual interaction you have must be consensual–no excuse. Educate yourself on what it means to get and give consent.

Section 375 in The Indian Penal Code

This problem is global. Around the world, the poorer you are, the more likely you are to be raped. According to the National Crime Victimization Survey, for example, Americans who had a household income of less than $7,500 per year reported being victims of sexual assault at 12 times the rate of people with a household income of $75,000 or more.

There are many reasons. Poor people everywhere are more vulnerable to every kind of exploitation. They are less able to make the law work for them. Drinking and drug abuse, both risk factors for rape, are more common. Poor women are often economically dependent on men. They may live in a neighborhood where, in the absence of jobs and material possessions, a man’s status depends on his aggression and toughness. The local culture may treat men as superior to women and therefore sexually entitled.

Archaeologists on Saturday unsealed a mummy coffin, sealed 2,500 years ago, in front of a live audience in Egypt. A video showing people waiting to get a look at the mummy has surfaced online.

Archaeologists found 59 sealed wooden sarcophagi earlier this year in the necropolis of Saqqara, south of Cairo near Memphis. The region is home to several pyramids, including the famous Giza Pyramids. It was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the 1970s.

The discovery was announced on Friday by Egypt’s Minister of Antiquities and Tourism, Dr. Khaled El-Enany.

‘Today I can say most of the discoveries have been made by Egyptian teams on Egyptian soil. This is something I am immensely proud of,’ El-Enany said.

He said the mission had started re-excavating the site two months ago, and uncovered a burial shaft 36 feet deep. Inside, they found 13 intact coffins.

The team continued their excavations, discovering two more shafts – 32 and 39 feet deep – also filled with coffins.

The coffins will be transferred to the new Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza for display

Hathras gang rape | Victim cremated without consent, says family

Rape is the fourth most common crime against women in India. According to the 2018 annual report of the National Crime Records Bureau(NCRB), 33,356 rape cases were reported across the country, or an average of 91 rapes daily.

Hathras gang rape | Victim cremated without consent, says family

The police in Balrampur district have arrested two people for allegedly gang-raping and murdering a 22-year-old woman who was employed at a private firm.

“Some media channels are reporting that her back, hands and legs were broken. This has not been ascertained in the post-mortem,” said Balrampur SP Dev Ranjan Verma. However, a further probe into the matter was on, he added.

The woman’s father and cousin sat on a dharna outside the hospital on Tuesday. They were joined by Bhim Army and Congress workers before the body was taken to Uttar Pradesh

Two weeks ago, four upper-caste men in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras gang-raped and assaulted of a 19-year-old Dalit girl. She succumbed to her death on September 29, 2020. Amidst claims by the Hathras SP Vikrant Vir that there was no sign of sexual assault of the girl, we woke up to the news of how the UP police rushed to burn her body at 2:30am on September 30. In the tweets below, we find how the UP police forced the parents to cremate the body of the victim.

When we reached the village [from Delhi], we found the village was turned into a police fortress. Police personnel stopped family members, including women, to come out of their houses, and manhandled them. All they [the family members] wanted was to wait till 8 a.m.,” he said. He said he did not know what material was used for his daughter’s funeral.

A strong police cordon was laid around the village on Wednesday as well. Media teams were stopped on the National Highway 509 and asked to walk on foot for 2.5 km to reach the village

REJECTION

Rejection of life

Rejection doesn’t mean you aren’t good enough, it mean the other person failed to notice what you have to offers

Being Ignored: The Unspoken Rejection. Sometimes you pour your heart and soul into trying to make a connection in your personal or professional life

Terse and Uncaring: The Flat-Out ‘No’ Rejection. People crave closure. ..

Rejection hurts because it creates an emotional wound. Here’s how not to let it leave a scar. Being excessively worried about rejection — to the point that we do not do things that might benefit us — can compromise the quality of our life.

Rejection of love

I love my rejection slips. They show me I try

I may have lost someone who didn’t love me, but you lost someone who truly love you

Rejection hurts but the key to get through this phase is by acknowledging your emotions. Mentally-strong people stay honest to themselves and accept how they are feeling. They adopt the ‘right coping’ mechanism to overcome their emotions like sadness, anger or embarrassment involving rejection.

Smart people use rejection as an opportunity to learn and grow as an individual. They might deal with the situation by recognising the areas where they can improve. They see it as an experience and move on in life with more wisdom.

NCB’s probe into Bollywood and Drugs

There are at least two angles running in tandem in terms of the NCB’s investigation into the link between Bollywood and drugs – regarding the Sushant Singh Rajput-Rhea Chakraborty and associated angle and regarding Manjinder Singh Sirsa’s complaint about a 2019 Bollywood party video that had emerged earlier in which a lot of Bollywood stars were present

Only on Monday, even as Jaya Saha is being interviewed by BCN, sources also confirmed to Republic that actors Shraddha Kapoor and Sara Ali Khan will likely be summoned by the agency at some point this week. Sara Ali Khan’s name appeared during the interrogation of Rhea Chakraborty, NCB had confirmed, as the potential summons of Shraddha Kapoor was a new development

It also comes from the fact that Rhea Chakraborty finally admitted to the BCN that she had indeed used drugs, cracking under questioning from the agency. Until then, she had claimed, including in the case of CBD oil, that all the drugs were for Sushant only and that she was just a facilitator, but that outfit fell off.

Anurag kashyap responds to sexual assault allegations by payal Ghosh

Payal Ghosh had alleged that Anurag Kashyap forced himself onto her. Anurag took to Twitter to respond to her sexual harassment allegations.

Anurag kashyap, payal ghosh, anurag kashyap and payal ghosh, metoo
  • Payal accused Mr Kashyap of sexual assault on her in a recent interview
  • She also made an appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to help her
  • Anurag Kashyap denied all allegations in a series of tweets on Sunday

Payal  Ghosh on Saturday shared a video of her interview with the news channel ABN Telugu, where she opened up on the encounter that happened around 2014-15. She claimed that the director asked her to come to another room, and then obscenely sought a sexual act from her.

Payal also said that no events in the recent past irked her to open up. She said that she had written about her experience two years ago during the #MeToo era. She said that her manager had asked her to delete her tweet. She also said that post that the filmmaker blocked her on WhatsApp

The 48-year-old director has been vocal against the criticism and vilification of Bollywood by celebrities and trolls.

“Such a long time was taken to shut me up, never mind. (But) while shutting me up, you lied so much that you dragged other women also in it. Please maintain some dignity madam. All I will say is that all your allegations are baseless,” Kashyap tweeted.

Refuting the claims, Kashyap said the video is a testimony of “how much truthful and false” there is.

She also said that she will take the help from the National Commission of Women. “I will send a detailed complaint to Rekha Sharma, soon,” she said.
